Here’s a clue you won’t want to ignore: Acclaimed mystery author RHYS BOWEN is on tour promoting the first book in her newest series, Her Royal Spyness. While it’s no mystery why the author has been nominated for every major mystery award in existence, it is unknown when Bowen (who also wrote the Constable Evans and Molly Murphy series) will be in town next, so head to The King’s English tonight. “Mamma Mia, here I go again” indeed! As part of Broadway Across America, MAMMA MIA! returns to the Capitol Theatre. The search is on for the father of Sophie just before her wedding day. What follows is mayhem, and reasons to sing along to memorable ABBA songs while getting ready for the upcoming theatrical film version—where singing along might be more frowned-upon. ANNIE KENNEDY loves to cook. Like many others, she first prepares many of her creations with olive oil, then bakes them in the oven. The difference is that what Kennedy pulls out of the oven is not the beginning of a meal, but rather the beginning of her artwork. Now on display at the Finch Lane Gallery are Kennedy’s alternative media works—including “Veil,” a detail from which is pictured—that use unlikely (edible) materials to explore her family upbringing. Figurative paintings by OLIVIA CELINE GLASCOCK are also on display, which portray Classical and Christian mythologies. The Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games were so five years ago. Now Park City is hosting an international sporting event in the summer: the MOUNTAIN BIKING WORLD PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, presented by Jeep. The battle for the biggest prize ($100,000 and a 2008 Jeep Liberty) in the mountain biking world takes place at The Canyons Resort today, where 16 elite racers battle it out. Want another reason to attend? Tickets are free. A live concert featuring The Supersuckers & Bonepony follows the awards ceremony. Check the Website for all details. After watching the Mountain Biking World Professional Championships, you may be looking for a place to kick your feet up and relax. You don’t need to go far, since the PARK CITY KIMBALL ARTS FESTIVAL is just a few miles away on Main Street. Though there are places to relax (like the beer and wine gardens), you’ll probably want to stay on your feet to check out artwork by more than 200 artists and make your way to three stages featuring live bands. When you can’t decide between Ruth’s Diner, Market Street Grill or Spencer’s … don’t. After all, the Share Our Strength’s TASTE OF THE NATION fund-raiser at Solitude Mountain Resort for childhood hunger is once again featuring food prepared by chefs from more than 25 local restaurants. Last year, the fund-raiser raised more than $112,000 for Utahns Against Hunger and the Utah Food Bank. This year, organizers are capping attendance at 1,100 (1,400 attended last year), so check the Website to reserve tickets and get more information. This year’s WorldStage! Under the Stars Concert Series wanted to present a portrait of America, and tonight’s installment could very well be considered the pinnacle. Enjoy the SOUNDS OF AMERICAN JAZZ, which features the all-male a cappella society Beehive Statesmen and the 16-piece Junction City Big Band. Half barbershop music and half “true” jazz, the concert gives you a lot to swing about—including the fact that the concert is free. It may be when the narrator declares, “The cane toads are coming, the cane toads are coming …” Or maybe it’s when the toad shower scene begins. But eventually there will be a point when you realize CANE TOADS, the latest installment of Science Movie Night, ceases to be a documentary in the strictest sense and becomes an offbeat parody—though still surprisingly informative as it presents its strange slice of history. Mark Lewis’ 1987 film deals with the introduction of about 100 Hawaiian cane toads to Australia to control pests—and how the plan seriously backfired. Stay for a discussion with Jeff Landry, a herpetologist from Utah’s Hogle Zoo, about the delicate balance of ecosystems. For MICHELLE CONDRAT—a young, newly graduated, already award-winning artist (including first place at the University of Utah BFA show)—her first solo show was a natural next step. Contemporary Art & Design Gallery got to her first. Condrat’s exhibition STYLES AND COLOR features work from three genres: photorealism, abstract painting and contemporary realism.
