Getting from spring to summer in Utah: What a long, strange trip it’s been. Between straight-line winds, driving hail and May blizzards, we’ve seen the wettest spring in years. And yep, I’m pretty sure the webbing that’s developing between my fingers and toes proves it.

We’ll make a safe wager and call it summer, at last.

Welcome to the City Weekly Summer Guide. Keep this copy nearby—it’s the bible for figuring out where to go, what to eat and drink and simply how to live well once the temperatures climb high enough to melt your brain.

Brain melt, in fact, is a pervasive problem in summer. It’s a condition that can render you quite feeble. In fact, all kinds of quandaries present themselves from June to September. Inside, the CW staff provides a list of summer problems, along with their solutions. From that sudden urge you have to leave the house naked to keeping your skiing muscles from atrophy, we’ve got an answer to your every summer predicament.

If anyone knows how to liven up a summer evening, it’s a Utah bartender. Inside, various barkeeps provide recipes for their favorite hot-weather drinks. Dining critic Ted Scheffler fires up the grill, but walks a greener path this year by giving you tips on grilling vegetables.

We know you’ll soon be diving into the nearest air-conditioned movie theater for heat relief. A&E editor Scott Renshaw (who’s also Utah’s best film critic) has a 4-star guide to popcorn at area theaters.

Veteran outdoorsman Ted Wilson provides five of the finest hikes in the Wasatch, ranging from easy to most challenging. And we’ve got you covered on two of summer’s lesser-known sports—outdoor paintball and Frisbee golf.

Finally, we didn’t forget the all-important listings for concerts, theater and festivals that round out everyone’s summer.

So stay cool. We’ll see you on the trails, at the pool, at an outdoor concert or dining al fresco soon.

Maybe summertime isn’t quite the wild expanse of freedom that it was when you were a kid, but when you’re standing in June looking at the summer stretching before you, it can still seem endless.
