Dem candidates press the flesh in Draper on Wednesday

Posted By on September 4, 2012, 5:43 PM

If you want to see Utah's Democrats in all their glory—albeit sans Scott Howell—head out to a private residence in Draper Wednesday night for politics and cookies at a county-fair-style rally.---

From 5 to 8 p.m. at 1021 E. Southfork Drive, Draper, there'll be 20-plus Democratic candidates in their respective booths, wanting to shake your hand and share their policies.

Organizer  La Vonne Maloney describes the evening as a mix of county fair and a small farmers market. It's the first time she's pulled together such an event and hopes there will be a good turnout. "It's the biggest gathering of Democrats Draper's ever seen," she says.

Among the Democrat glory seekers expected are Jim Matheson, running for Congressional District 4; Peter Cooke, running for governor; Ben McAdams, for Salt Lake County mayor; Soren Simonsen, for Congressional District 3; Josie Valdez, for State Representative 8; and Rebecca Chavez-Houk, for State Representative 24.

Scott Howell, who is running for U.S. Senator, had earlier committed to the event but can't make it. He went to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., to open this afternoon, along with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. It's the first-ever national meeting of the LDS Democrats caucus, so campaign officials will be standing in for him in Draper.

Go here for a list of all the candidates expected to attend, as well as directions on how to get to the event.
