A Riverton man who defrauded several families in Utah by taking prepayments for cabinets he never delivered was sentenced Monday to 1 to 15 years in prison for multiple counts of communications fraud.---

The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing identified 21 victims who lost $117,000 to 31-year-old Steven Jay Sizemore. Under his own name or that of Backwoods Cabinetry, Sizemore advertised his services on KSL.com and Buildwatch in 2009. He then took money for cabinets he neither delivered nor installed.

In a press release, Utah Department of Commerce executive director Francine Giani noted, "Consumers were given empty promises and left with empty kitchens as a result of Mr. Sizemore's costly actions."

A dozen victims testified at Sizemore's sentencing as to how his fraudulent actions had caused them not only financial problems but also marital stress.

"Some of Sizemore's victims lived without a functioning kitchen for weeks and months, and at least two families were stuck doing their dishes in the bathroom tub," said Assistant Attorney General Jake Taylor.

Third District judge Randall Skanchy ordered Sizemore to pay back the money he took from his victims, while leaving the restitution amount open-ended, in case other victims came forward.

Complaints against Sizemore can be filed with DOPL at dopl.utah.gov/investigations/complaint.html
