Immigration Activists Rally Against ALEC Friday

Posted By on July 26, 2012, 6:40 PM

The American Legislative Exchange Council is wrapping up its conference in Utah pimping business-friendly legislation to state lawmakers. This Friday immigration activists are keeping the heat on conference goers with a rally and candlelight vigil Friday.---

ALEC, a nonprofit organization that advances limited government and free enterprise is also about advancing private parlays between corporate behemoths and state lawmakers, just like how the for-profit prison industry courted lawmakers in regards to “get-tough” immigration bills which invariably would mean more bodies to house in detainment and correctional facilities as City Weekly reported on in 2010. With ALEC influencing Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070 and similar versions of the bill later passed in the Utah Legislature, local activists are rallying against ALEC’s stop in Salt Lake City.

The event will feature speakers from the Salt Lake DREAM Team, United for Social Justice, Industrial Workers of the World and the Revolutionary Student Union, as well as food, music, ALEC piñatas and later a candlelight vigil in remembrance of those affected by ALEC’s direct actions. Check it out Friday, July 27, from 7-10 p.m. at the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State
