Glad You Asked: Bernie's, Rock and Raekwon

Posted By on March 28, 2012, 10:56 AM

Dear GYA, You guys are a bunch of bodagets! Why the heck didn't I win a Best of Utah award?! I have all kinds of skills: nunchuck skills, bow-hunting skills, computer-hacking skills ... Utahns want people to win who have great skills! Gosh. --Napoleon Dynamite---

Napoleon, you sound upset and you're not the only one. Every year, people rage about how they didn't win or about how someone more deserving should have won. You need to remember that's it's impossible to make everyone happy. Also, you don't live in Utah, you live in the Gem State. But since you're visiting, here are some things going on today that will make you feel better.

Tonight at 8 p.m., Brewvies will be showing a free screening of the spring-break classic Weekend at Bernie's. It's the story of two losers who have to pretend their murdered boss is still alive in order to keep the party going; plenty of Hawaiian shirts and congo lines. City Weekly's The Word will be there, shooting photos and handing out goodies.

Over at the Urban Lounge, the drunken Southern rockers Lucero will be performing at 9 p.m. Mostly known for their popular 2001 jam, "My Best Girl," Lucero will also be wooing the crowd with new material from their latest album, Women and Work. Larry and his Flask will be opening and tickets are still available for $18 at the door or $20 in advance.

If you're in the mood for something completely different, then check out the Wu-Tang rapper Chef Raekwon over at the Hotel at 9 p.m. Everyone knows that Raekwon always brings the ruckus, but I'm more excited about seeing the opening set from Chicago-based rapper Freddie Gibbs. I'll be there shooting photos for Shots in The Dark, so come get your picture in the paper!

Other events of note:

- The Central Gallery will be presenting Paul Winter's Iron Within all day today.

- Megafaun and Field Report will be performing at Kilby Court tonight at 7 p.m.

- Creative Non-Fiction Writing workshop at The Leonardo tonight at 6 p.m.
