Sundance 2012: Locals Best Bets for 1/20

Posted By on January 20, 2012, 3:00 PM

Every day throughout the festival, we'll advise Salt Lakers where to use their Sundance Locals Quick Passes, or where to try to wait-list. ---

In the early slot, check out the World Documentary entry Searching for Sugar Man. Just picked up by Sony Classics as the first acquisition of the festival, it's the story of a musician named Sixto Rodriguez who seemed destined for stardom until he disappeared into obscurity; his re-emergence as a cult phenomenon in South Africa inspires some fans to find out what happenhed to him. Critics and fest audiences have thus far been enthusiastic.

For the later slot, the Indonesian action film The Raid has been a hit at other international festivals, following an elite police team tasked with taking down a crime lord in a Jakarta tenement building. With serious dramas and documentaries aplenty ahead, kick things off with some high-energy genre thrills.
