Lounge Act Weekend: Benefits, free flicks, soul hits

Posted By on December 9, 2011, 10:15 AM

There's so much going down around town, you simply won't be able to choose just one way to spend your time. Here's a little guide to help you.---

FRIDAY

The weekend starts with a serious bang, courtesy of a slate of events sure to please everyone in your posse in one way or another.

The second KRCL Polar Jubilee is Friday night at the Salt Lake Hardware Building, and features local musicians doing their best Rolling Stones and David Bowie impressions, Bad Brad Wheeler's Hanukkah Harmonica Army, treats to eat and Circus Brown's lap all warmed up and ready for you to sit on. Oh, he'll be dressed as Santa, so it's totally cool. The fun starts at 7 p.m.

If you're in Ogden, the sweet soul of youngster Allen Stone will be on full display at Mojo's -- a rare occasion when I'm jealous of what's going on in O-town on a Friday night. SLC has a fine show of its own Friday, though, thanks to The Entrance Band playing at The Urban Lounge along with Spell Talk and Dark Seas.

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (formerly Salt Lake Art Center) is screening Herb & Dorothy, a doc about a couple of modest means who managed to build one of the world's most stunning art collections. It's free, and starts at 7 p.m.

SATURDAY

While the City Weekly staff partakes in our company Christmas party, we'll be counting on you readers to warm up some of these events so they're at full raging speed by the time we're ready to hit the town later Saturday night.

The 29th Annual Vivaldi by Candlelight Benefit Concert goes down at the First Presbyterian Church at 8 p.m.

Clark Planetarium is hosting Breakfast with Santa on the Moon, a chance to dine with the jolly fat guy, learn a little science, then take in a special screening of Arthur Christmas. It all starts at 8:30 a.m.

The Intermountain Acoustic Music Association is holding an awards show, the IAMMIES, to honor all the best acoustic music on the Wasatch Front, and you can be part of the fun. It's a great idea, and, hopefully, will be an annual hootenanny from here on out. It starts at 6 p.m. at the Holladay United Church of Christ.

At In The Venue, hip-hop heroes The Knux headline a show that's sure to be stellar.

SUNDAY

Don't have your holiday shopping done? Of course not! Hit the Craft Sabbath Holiday Boutique on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Main Library and get to work!
