Lounge Act Thursday: Serious talk and seriously worthy tunes

Posted By on September 8, 2011, 8:00 AM

Among the activities available to you, the active Salt Laker, on Thursday? Everything from rock shows to high-minded cultural discussions.---

The Salt Lake City Main Library is hosing a three-day Conference to Address Cultural and Religious Pluralism. The mix of lectures, discussions and films is sure to be stimulating, and its scheduling as we hit the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 seems like a good idea.

The Jung Society of Utah is hosting a lecture Thursday night at the U on Inner Journeys in the Outer World. For thousands of years, the Antarctic has been a place in the collective imagination as well as a geographical location. Just as explorers have traveled to those regions, poets and writers have explored the polar regions of the soul. In November 2009, Dr. Robert Romanyshyn traveled to the Antarctic, connecting to a dream he had over 30 years ago about a journey to the polar regions of the Earth. This kick-off event to the Jung Society of Utah's third year will explore the intertwining of psyche and nature in the context of the ecological crisis of the melting polar ice.

And if you're looking for some tunes, the Chop Tops, the Rocketz and The Strikers bring the rock to Burt's Tiki Lounge Thursday. Alien Ant Farm (yes, they still exist) are headlining a gig at In The Venue. And the amazing Charlie Hunter (pictured) headlines a gig at The State Room.
