Lounge Act Weekend: Comics, Tunesmiths and Ladyfest 2011

Posted By on July 8, 2011, 10:02 AM

We help you choose among all this wild weekend has to offer, right here.---

Let's do this.

FRIDAY

Wiseguys at Trolley Square welcomes Jenna Kim Jones, a Utah native and Mormon gal who helps bring the funny to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as her day job, while working the New York City comedy club circuit at night. She'll be doing shows at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Blonde Grizzly gallery has a new show this weekend; Reflections: A Menagerie Of New Work By Candace Jean reflects the artist's interest in fantasy and childhood imagery.

On the music side, Sam Bush headlines a free show at the newly revamped Gallivan Center Friday at 7 p.m. Nearby at the City & County Building, the SLC International Jazz Festival kicks off its weekend of tunes with Sheila E. and her insanely talented family of Escovedos. And at the Sandy Amphitheater, Steve McDonald brings his Celtic sounds to town.

SATURDAY

Saturday brings the annual 15th & 15th Street Festival, always a good time and a chance to hit The King's English and other area shops.

Stone Temple Pilots headline at Wendover's Peppermill Concert Hall, and there are still tix available. You can get a gamble on with your grunge licks.

The Triple A All-Star weekend kicks off Saturday with a concert by Blues Traveler and Chris Isaak. The following days will include a home-run derby and the actual all-star game.

SUNDAY

The most excellent Avett Brothers (pictured) headline a show Sunday at Gallivan Center, and you'll want to be sure to get there on time to hear Jessica Lea Mayfield open the show.

The July Craft Sabbath show takes place Sunday at the Main Library in SLC, and the day-long Ladyfest girl-friendly music festival is going down at Free Speech Zone; read Portia Early's take on the event right here.
