John Sayles: A Moment in the Sun
Author/director John Sayles will read from and sign his newest novel, A Moment in the Sun. Sayles' novel examines the extraordinary climate of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Gold has been struck in the Yukon. Relations with Cuba are tense. Pulitzer and Hearst reign supreme in New York. A Moment in the Sun portrays the atmosphere of this moment in stunning detail. Sayles' previous novels include, Pride of the Bimbos, and Union Dues. He has also directed 17 feature films including, Matewan and Eight Men Out.

SLC Film Center: Into Eternity
Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storage, which is vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes. In Finland, the world's first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock -- a huge system of underground tunnels -- that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous.

Torrey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival
If you’re up for a drive south, this event might just be worth the gas money. For an Old West weekend, visit The Entrada Institute's 10th Torrey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival. Beginning Friday night, the festival will feature performances by a number of western musicians and will spotlight readings by cowboy poets, including the winners of Wayne High School's cowboy poetry contest. Performers include Rough Around the Edges, Ray Conrad, Paul Boruff and Nan Weber, Dick and Jane Morton and Bren Hill with Blue Sage, Vapor Trail Hands, Tangle Ridge, Mary Kaye and the Duel, Katy Creek Band and Cameron Hallows.

Summit County Used Book Sale
It’s that time of year for the Friends of the Summit County Libraries annual Memorial Day Weekend Used Book Sale at the Kimball Junction branch. Bring your old FOL bag and fill it for $12, or buy a new FOL bag and fill it for $15. The Public Sale runs Friday, May 27 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, May 28 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m. and the Bargain Blowout on Monday, May 30 from noon-5 p.m..
