Lounge Act Weekend: Musical mayhem across the valley

Posted By on April 22, 2011, 9:09 AM

Punk legends, local rappers and jazz cats headline some of the best of the weekend's festivities. And this week, we're focusing on all music, all the time.---

Friday

The highlight of Friday night's music offerings, for me at least, is the ad hoc local supergroup Spiders from Mars, who will be playing a slew of Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie tunes at The Urban Lounge, with The Future of the Ghost opening. The band was formed originally to play a one-off KRCL David Bowie party, and this follow-up show is reportedly the last chance you'll get to see some of the best in local musical talent get their Bowie on.

Friday night you can catch the CD release party for local hip-hopper Burnell Washburn, who will be joined by a who's who of Utah rap talent for his gig at Kilby Court. The show starts at 7 p.m. Also Friday, the Excellence in the Community Concert Series winds up its 2010-11 season with a show featuring award-winning jazz educator Caleb Chapmen and his Crescent Super Band; the Little Big Band opens the show at Murray Theater. Also Friday, you can find the City Weekly Street Team kicking it at the Grand Kerfuffle show at the U, featuring Mike Posner and Chiddy Bang.

Saturday

Saturday night, it's all about punk legend Mike Watt, coming to town in support of his new album Hyphenated-Man. You can read our interview with Mike Watt right here, then go check out the show at The Complex Saturday night.

If you're up in Logan on Saturday, or desiring a mini-roadie, bluesy folk troubador Dana Hubbard is headlining a gig at Crumb Brothers Bakery at 7 p.m.

Sunday

What better way to celebrate Easter and recover from your brunching or egg-gathering than by enjoying the darker-than-dark rustic rock of The Builders and the Butchers, headlining at The Urban Lounge.
