Lounge Act Tuesday: The War on Drugs, Percussive Footwork

Posted By on March 15, 2011, 9:14 AM

It's a relatively chill Tuesday, but also a fine time to start ramping up your nighttime shenanigans in training for St. Patty's Day Thursday.---

One ideal option is the rock of Philly's The War on Drugs, pictured, which owes a debt to classic rockers like Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen for sure, but is still doesn't feel retro. Adam Granduciel is a fine songsmith, and this band was also the launching pad for indie-fave Kurt Vile. The band's latest EP, Future Weather, is a fine set of songs, and I'm guessing the live show will be stellar.

Tonight at the Covey Center for Dance in Provo, there's a Percussive Footwork Concert that will include tap, flamenco and clogging along with, yes, Irish dance, so a somewhat ideal appetizer for St. Patrick's Day, other than the whole Utah County factor. I recommend a stop at ABG's before you pop in for the 7:30 p.m. show.

Back in SLC, Bar Deluxe is hosting Ragged Jubilee, Red Bennies and David Williams Tuesday night in a roots-oriented gig sure to please the folkies and alt-country kids.

And with that, I'm heading off to Austin to partake in SXSW, the annual smorgasbord of music new and old. There's something like 2,000 bands playing between today and Saturday, and I'll do my damnedest to catch a bunch of them, especially if they're headed our way. Check back on the City Weekly music blog for reports from steamy Texas starting Thursday.
