Child porn survivor finds happiness

Posted By on September 21, 2010, 9:35 AM

Last Saturday in Bountiful, Gina Zhdilkov found a happy ending to a story City Weekly told two years ago: she got married.---

That simple act of faith in the future would have been unthinkable to the woman I profiled in Face of Child Porn, which detailed the sex abuse she suffered as a child at the hands of her father, who photographed her during the abuse. Having struggled to put those demons in the past, she then had to deal with her third husband going to prison for child porn possession.

At the end of the story, Zhdilkov spoke of the betrayal she felt that the man whom she loved, whom she had looked forward to growing old with and sharing memories together, was in a way a worse monster than her father. She would never love again she prophecised.

Nevertheless, she found a space to nurture hope and put up a profile on match.com. She wrote she wanted a man with convictions. J D Hill, a one time script writer for X-96, e-mailed to ask her would parking citations count?

A cautious Zhdilkov asked Hill to write a 1,000 word essay; he responded by writing 35 haikus. While on vacation one year after they started dating, he proposed.

The wedding at Bountiful's Canterbury Place was a simple, moving affair in an enclosed outdoor arena beneath a bright blue sky. Bride and groom exchanged their own written vows before family and friends. As I watched the laughing, smiling couple walk up the aisle, the woman I had profiled 24 months before was no more than a distant, sad memory, one Zhdilkov had clearly left far behind.
