Saturday night, at Kilby Court, I was impressed with this awesome band Social Studies. They totally killed it and had me searching Google and Myspace for more.---
Social Studies rocked from the beginning of their set ‘till the end. The next time they roll through Salt Lake I'll definitely attend. I’ll probably be forced to pay 20 bucks at some lame venue and fight off a million teenage hipsters, but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.
Too many bands just are not that great live. That's not the case with Social Studies—they had it all and more! Their drummer rocked, their guitars blared and they put everything together for a killer show. The best part of Social Studies (and this is not up for debate) was their vocalist. This girl was SPECTACULAR! Her voice was amazing and immediately threw me for a loop. She went from soft and smooth to loud and rich with ease. Her ability to transition sounds and style without hesitation was impressive. Their website describes her voice and style as "enchanting;" I thought it was downright sexy. Everything about this band was great. Sound, depth, talent and stage presence all combining for a awesome experience. Pretty much a sick show!
I don't know how to label Social Studies, as they don't really fall into any specific group or genre. I’d hate to throw them under the “indie-pop” train, because they were waaay too talented and cool for that. If I must label Social Studies, I'd go with indie rock, but "totally kick ass" is a much better fit.
Anyway, Social Studies totally killed it last night. Check out their website or look them up on Myspace if you want more info.
