Goodbye, Sen. McCoy: We hardly knew ye

Posted By on December 2, 2009, 6:07 AM

Capitol Hill just won't be the same without Sen. Scott McCoy.

I've admired McCoy since he took office, infuriating the 'phobes and inspiring newspapers to invent a new attribution style (for years, he was consistently known on first reference as "openly gay state Sen. Scott McCoy, D-Salt Lake City"). ---

He's been a much-needed voice of reason on the Hill; if McCoy were a superhero, his special power would be the ability to maintain an equitable tone in the face of craziness. Yet his courage to stand up for Democratic principles has made him a formidable presence. His replacement will have some big shoes to fill.

McCoy is leaving the Senate at the end of the week in order to focus on his legal career. His service to the people of Utah cannot be underestimated. A hearty round of thanks is in order -- we wish him all the best.
