You Missed It: Archer

Posted By on September 18, 2009, 10:47 AM

Actually, I almost missed it, too -- uncharacteristically for FX, the network didn't hype the hell out of the sneak preview for its new animated series Archer (premiering in January; apparently, they're taking the Glee waaay-advance route with the pilot). ---

Astute Adult Swim regulars will recognize the animation style immediately: Archer is from the brains behind Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo, and plays like a slightly more linear version of the latter. Sterling Archer (voiced by Jon Benjamin, probably best known as Coach McGuirk from Home Movies) is an international spy who works under his mother (Arrested Development's Jessica Walter) at a covert agency that's less functional that Dunder-Mifflin or Homeland Security. Chris Parnell, Judy Greer and Aisha Tyler also provide voices, but this is Benjamin's show all the way.

Last night's pilot (tucked after the season premiere of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) was damned funny, but in a very Adult Swim kind of way--FX viewers might be confused, especially if Archer isn't paired with a like-minded comedy like Sunny in January.

A bit of last night's pilot:
