Roller Derby This Weekend: JCRD in Layton

Posted By on August 27, 2009, 4:05 PM

It's been over a week since I've mentioned anything roller-derby-related, so here's this: Ogden's Junction City Roller Dolls are playing this Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. JCRD is the other O-Town derby group, not the one that lost by over 300 points to a visiting Colorado league recently and then inferred they may have been "cheating," FYI. ---

Junction City's expo bout this weekend is under the theme of "Cops vs. Robbers," which longtime readers of my oh-so-extensive Utah roller-derby coverage (all nine of you) may remember was the exact same theme of the Salt City Derby Girls' debut game back in the spring of 2006. Don't recall who won that one, but the tailgate party was par excellence.

After this bout, the JCRD will face the SCDG in a rematch (Ogden lost to SLC earlier this season) at Golden Spike Arena on Sept. 12. Word has it that Junction City have stepped up their game and may give the Salt City Shakers travel team--who defeated Reno's Battle Born Derby Demons in an away game in Nevada last weekend--more of a fight than expected

In other roller-derby news while we're all here, the theatrical release date of Drew Barrymore's skate flick Whip It has been moved up to Oct. 2. It stars that Juno chick and, at least going by the trailer, looks better than ... uh ... Kansas City Bomber from the '70s? That's the last roller-derby movie (not documentary) I can name.
