The second roller-derby bout of the Salt City Derby Girls’ 2009 season was played for nearly 1,000 spectators at the Salt Palace on Saturday, April 18. Unfortunately, a handful of rookie Bomber Babes received a real-time schooling from the more experienced Death Dealers in front of a whole lotta eyeballs, getting beaten by an over 100-point margin.
The Dealers dominated from the first jam, with Moonraker scoring the first five of what would eventually add up to over 130 (!) points of her own. Subsequent jams by Roller Kitty, Smack & Deckher and even Sassie Lass (a blocker) were few and far between, as the Dealers used Moonraker more times than a bottle of Purell at a Rock of Love reunion special.
With even the usually unstoppable jammer NOS frustrated on the scoring front, the Bombers concentrated more on defense toward the end of the first 30-minute period; Phatal Pheromone was in prime brutal form, knocking Dealers down like bowling pins on league night. But when Roller Kitty pulled out a blazing 19-point jam right before the halftime buzzer, it was all over for the Bombers.
Still, NOS nearly matched that jam early in the second period with a 14-point run, shortly after Moonraker took the Dealers to the 100 mark. The Bombers poured on the defense, with sub Donkey Punch (aka Leave It to Cleavers’ Dirty Pirate Hooker) taking out Dealer Wanton Rebellion, and NOS delivering an inadvertent (or maybe purposeful at that point) head-butt to Moonraker. The outcome remained the same: 176-69, a rub-it-in victory for the Death Dealers.
