We here at City Weekly might have to work on Labor Day, but we won't hold your three-day weekend against you while we're putting together another sparkling issue. Here's the lowdown on what's going on around town.---
FRIDAY
The Salt Lake Film Society continues its "Summer of 35MM" with an excellent choice, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This is one of my fave Sundance flicks of all-time, and I don't even like musicals! Of course, most musicals don't genuinely rawk like this one. And there's a live pre-show starting Friday and Saturday at 11:30 p.m. at the Tower, so check it out if you've never seen Hedwig, or even if you have.
Up in Layton, the Gangrene Film Festival gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday, bringing a bunch of excellent comedic short films together at the Ed Kenley Amphitheater.
The Urban Lounge hosts a hot night of hip-hop featuring Sweatshop Union, as well as locals Pat Maine and Burnell Washburn.
SATURDAY
Saturday night at Usana Amphitheater, the reunited blink-182 headlines a show in which the openers might steal the gig, thanks to My Chemical Romance and Rancid both being on the bill. Up at Deer Valley, Civil Twilight and Katie Herzig share a bill.
Rootsy rocker Jackie Greene headlines a free gig at The Canyons Saturday at 6 p.m. And Eisley (pictured) headlines at Kilby Court Saturday night; you can read our interview with the Texas pop-rockers right here, then hit the show.
Yoga fans will want to check in on the Great Salt Lake Yoga Fest at the Salt Lake Krishna Festival Saturday.
SUNDAY
The show is sold-out, and the powers that be at Red Butte will soon be putting up a fence to keep people off the hill outside the venue that's been damaged by all the attention, so consider this your last chance to peek into Red Butte from afar. And Alison Krauss & Union Station with Dawes opening is a pretty good reason to tromp up the hill one last time.
The Soldier Hollow Classic actually starts Friday, and it runs all weekend, offering you the perfect chance to watch world-class sheepdogs do their shepherding, among other activities.
