Live, Yeasayer is every bit as crisp, clean and vibrant as they are in the studio. A crowd braved the heat and smell of a packed Club Sound (at In the Venue) to bear witness to the Brooklyn-based, five-piece touring ensemble make fiery beats and layered, blissy tunes.---

What shows start at 7 p.m. on a Friday, I mean really? The In the Venue complex always seems unpredictable as to when they'll start a show—sometimes beginning at eight-ish and sometimes well after 10 p.m. Friday's show started like clockwork, and many unsuspecting folks missed Sleigh Bells, the tiny Brooklyn band with big noise and heavier bass. Then, Yeasayer took the stage and their presence was big.
Besides a few odd run-ins with Yeasayer's music over the last few years and a couple of friends' die-hard fervor for the band, I haven't seen them "blow up" like so many up-and-coming bands. That said, it was cool to see many fans in the crowd singing along to such popular favorites as "2080" and "O.N.E." The contrast in those two songs is indicative of the band's shift from their first album's worldly mellowness to their second's dancy, upbeat and matured effort. Check out what City Weekly had to say about that here.

Backdropped by four pulsating screens—that looked similar to windshield screens—flashing pink, blue and purple in time to the bouncing bass and pounding synth lines. Sonically, these guys don't mess around. Every member, on top of their regular instrument, had some sort of electronic, beat-making sound contraption, to layer the melodies for a full-fledged music experience. This band is definitely here to stay.
Even with a limited song base, Yeasayer played each song like they'd never tire of them—and neither would the crowd. Other highlights included "Untitled," "Ambling Alp" and "Madder Red." At the end of the show, lead singer Chris Keating said, "We'd normally stop playing here but we're having a good time and so are you, so let's keep going." And, as some of the crowd playfully yelled, "Fuck you," he said, "I like that. You're a bunch of freaks. So, are we." The set ended with "Sunrise" and the plaid-wearing hipsters filtered into the street, still wanting more, as it was still early.
