The highest ranking elected Mormon in the country is critical of his church's involvement in California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in that state.---

Senate Majority leader Reid, a Democrat, actually criticized his church, something that's rather rare for members of the church "in good standing." Apparently he was far more critical of church in private than he was willing to be in public, reports the Salt Lake Tribune's Matt Canham.

His spokesman only confirmed that Reid believes, as does the LDS church, that marriage should be between a man and a woman, but Reid "believes that the resources that went into the Proposition 8 effort could have been put to better use."

Well, that's nothing to throw a gay pride parade over, but it's something to note. It gives all those young gay Mormons who are in the closet someone to look to as an alternative view. Reid could do a lot more for those kids by simply being more outspoken. Maybe some day he will. If you believe, as members of Affirmation do, that Mormon homophobia has a direct link to Mormon suicide, then Reid could literally save lives.
